Join Moving Traditions’ conversation with Anita Diamant, bestselling author of “Period. End of Sentence.: A New Chapter in the Fight for Menstrual Justice,” featuring two Kol Koleinu teen feminist fellows advocating for menstrual justice, following Period Action Day. The webinar will help parents and Jewish educators break through the taboo and have conversations to support pre-teens who will be getting their periods, teens who menstruate and those who don’t but still need to know.
This program is geared toward parents and educators of Jewish pre-teens and teens. If that’s not you but you are interested, you are welcome and encouraged to join us. Pre-teens and teens are also welcome.
About the speakers:
Anita Diamant is a novelist, journalist, essayist and the author of five guidebooks to contemporary Jewish life. Diamant is the bestselling author of the novels “The Boston Girl,” “The Red Tent,” “Good Harbor,” “The Last Days of Dogtown” and “Day After Night,” and the collection of essays “Pitching My Tent.” An award-winning journalist whose work appeared in The Boston Globe Magazine and Parenting, and many others, she is the author of six nonfiction guides to contemporary Jewish life. She lives in Massachusetts.
Orli Hockenstein and Dahlia Miller are Kol Koleinu fellows who developed a social change project titled “Periods and ME: Menstruation Education” as part of their participation in Moving Traditions’ teen feminist fellowship.
- Orli Hockenstein is a junior at Hunter College High School in New York City. She loves math, musical theater and baseball, and she never leaves her house without a book or her ukulele. She is a member of B’nai Jeshurun in New York City, where she is a member of a Rosh Hodesh group.
- Dahlia Miller is a junior at The Beacon School in New York City. She lives in Brooklyn with her parents and older brother and attends services and Hebrew school at Congregation Beth Elohim, where she is also a madricha (teaching assistant), a youth group board member (BeSTY/NFTY) and a member of a Rosh Hodesh group.
Rabbi Tamara Cohen, VP of program strategy for Moving Traditions, will moderate the conversation. Tamara harnesses and guides the incredible people power of Moving Traditions’ educational design, training and field staff and builds strategic partnerships in service of expanding the reach and impact of its programs and initiatives. Prior to Moving Traditions, Tamara worked as a spiritual leader and as an educator in Jewish community and higher education settings, with a focus on Jewish feminist, LGBT and multicultural community-building. A published writer and liturgist, Cohen holds a rabbinical degree from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, an M.A. in women’s history from Sarah Lawrence College and a BA summa cum laude from Barnard College. Cohen lives in Philadelphia with her partner and two children.
