Temple Emeth in Chestnut Hill is inaugurating a new educational program for post-b’nei mitzvah students in grades 7-9. Haskalah (meaning “enlightenment”) will meet monthly. Each session will include a light dinner and time for socializing followed by a class on contemporary Judaism. Part of the curriculum is a social action project, providing an opportunity for students to reach beyond the classroom.
The program will be led and taught by Temple Emeth clergy and educators.
Haskalah is a natural extension of Temple Emeth’s Binah B’emet educational program, which emphasizes student-centered education and making the material relevant and connected to students’ lives. The focus is on creating connections between people, between people and the environment, and between Jewish values and the contemporary world.
Haskalah, like Binah B’emet, aims to connect learning and living, studying and doing, resulting in the creation of a community of lifelong learners and active members who are excited, fulfilled and purposeful in their Jewish journeys.
