Like many middle school students, David Rosemberg ’22 experienced a bit of heartbreak over his feelings for another student. Unlike many other students, he wrote and performed a song to express his feelings.
“In fifth grade, I had liked this girl who unfortunately didn’t like me back and, as a result of this, over the first few days of summer I was pretty sad,” he said. “I wanted to be able to put my feelings into something that would make me feel heard.”
The resulting song is called “You Are the Sunshine.”
“The song itself is an anthem to people trying to say their true feelings but don’t know how,” he said. “I really wish I had a song to help me through my sadness, so I hope this song gives people the opportunity to say what they want to through music.”
Inspired by his father, Hazzan Elias Rosemberg at Newton’s Temple Emanuel, David caught the musical bug at a very early age. Around age 3, he estimates, he started singing, acting, dancing and playing the drums.
“Writing music is a way to drown out all my problems and turn them into something upbeat and happy, and I’m so grateful that music is such a big part of my life,” he said.
He’s also written two other original songs, “Why” and “Never Lose,” and he’s working on a fourth. Some of the inspiration for his music comes from his love of Broadway and pop. That theatrical talent can be seen at Schechter, where David is part of the current eighth grade musical, “Grease,” which just started rehearsals. He also sings in the Shir Chai choir, plays soccer and basketball and has volunteered at Schechter Soccer.
