Protection. Safety. Strength. Power. Right now we could all use a little more sense of well-being. The Jewish myth of the golem summoned ancient Jewish magic to create protection in difficult times. What happens when Mental Health Awareness Month and Shavuot collide? Let us tell you! Make your own golem out of cut-up comic books with Isaac and Rabbi Shawna from Paper Midrash in a 90-minute workshop that includes visual learning about the legend of the golem. This is perfect for the Zoom world in which we find ourselves. No art experience, clay or magic spells required; just your enthusiasm!

Shavuot is the holiday of giving Torah on Mount Sinai and is said to be when each person present received all of Torah’s midrashim (interpretations) through the ages, including the interpretations that were unique to each person there.  This Shavuot, we’ll engage in creating our own interpretations of Jewish tradition through creating cut-paper visual midrashim of our own, through this workshop on Zoom.  Paper Midrash is sophisticated text study through a unique art practice, leveraging contemporary narratives from comic books, movies and other pop culture to inspire new insights into traditional texts.

This workshop has limited spots available and is open to all Jewish teens in grades 9-12 in the Greater Boston community.

Before the event: Supplies will be available for pickup in advance at Temple Shir Tikva in Wayland. Details will be communicated to those who register. Contact Jenna Friedman with any questions.

This event is powered by Temple Shir Tikva in partnership with Jewish Teen Initiative at CJP and supported by a CJP Teen Community Impact Grant.
